Vekt: 12,21kg

B. THE Super 4
1. A few words
We are very happy to present to you our new marathon XC bike, the Super 4! We wanted a bike capable of easily going down a hill that it can just as easily climb up, a performance balance not given to every bike on the market. Our R&D team spent two years of work on this project, and they have come up with a bike that has an output efficiency close to that of an XC bike. The added advantage of the COMMENCAL Contact System means lots of small-bump sensitivity for incredible grip and traction, but with a huge capacity to absorb big impacts without bottoming out. After 3 different prototypes, the Super 4 was born!
We have paid specific attention to the geometry of the bike: sloping top tube for more manoeuvrability, shorter chainstays for more dynamic handling, and the head angle is sufficiently slack to allow you to fly down the hills in total confidence.
2. All the secrets of the Super 4
The front triangle of the Super 4 is built around two “closed” triangles, a gauge of reliability and rigidity. Particular attention has been paid to the tubing, which has enabled us to do away with a head tube gusset, creating a more fluid design. Triple-butted tubing has enabled us to lose 300grs/10.6oz from the front triangle when compared with the 2008 Meta 4.
The increased slope of the top tube is 20mm/0.79” lower then the Meta 4, which is not typical of bikes in this category, but corresponds to our vision of MTB. This pronounced top tube slope design helps to give incredible manoeuvrability, meaning any technical singletrack can be tackled with ease.
The front and rear triangles are linked by a single oversized pivot, which is part of an extruded piece that includes the bottom bracket, and guarantees a perfect alignment (and rigidity) of the components. The axle rests on two stainless steel rings (inserted inside the front triangle so as to avoid any risk of ovalizing the frame) and is mounted on 3 cartridge bearings: 2 on the left, and 1 on the right, resulting in very good rigidity while keeping the weight down. There is an integrated headset for a more fluid design, but also to save some more weight!
The Contact System and the front triangle are integrated together. The “seat “ stays double as the connecting rod, thus obtaining a very good balance between weight, rigidity and reliability. The Super 4 has 100mm/4” of rear travel, with some serious work being carried out on the linkage system. The challenge was to reduce as much as possible pedal bobbing while retaining maximum small-bump sensitivity and big impact absorption. Particular attention was paid to the preparation of the rear shock so that it works in harmony with our Contact System. This preparation was done with the help of FOX Racing Shocks, and was signed off after numerous trail tests. The result is fantastic performance, the Super 4 being dynamic like an XC bike, but still offering comfort, grip and traction that is unexpected for a bike with 100mm/4” of travel.
The main pivot point has been positioned so that the suspension is unaffected by pedal bobbing while on the middle chainring, or kickback while on the smallest chainring. This choice is justified as the Super 4 has the most fun on technical trails, and that it is in those conditions that we wanted the bike to be at its best. An added bonus is that the position of the main pivot mans we could shorten the chainstays, make them stiffer and more reliable.
The rocker linkages are completely new. So as to free up the rear shock from all constraints and make the rear swingarm as rigid as possible, the diabolo (the hourglass spacer between the rockers) is fixed to the rocker so as to form an ultra-rigid single part. This solution has also been adapted to the Meta 55 and Meta 6 range.
A new mech hanger has also been developed for extra strength and rigidity. It is now attached to the frame with 2 screws.
All axles are mounted with sealed cartridge bearing, with the exception of the rear chain and “seat” stay junction (mounted with Igus polymer bearings). As the degree of rotation is extremely small (only 3.11°), there is no real justification to use “normal” bearings. For an equivalent build, Igus polymer bearings offer a lighter and more space efficient solution. This saving means we can spec an oversized axle and therefore increase the rigidity of the ensemble. The bolts are CrMO Black Chrome Plated for strength and looks, with machined dust caps.
A few final words: The Super 4 is in its element whether it be on a dusty XC trail or on a mountain raid. This bike is offers performance for all the riders out there who love REAL mountain biking.
